MIAMI — Southern Miss pitcher Stevie Powers threw the team’s first complete-game shutout in almost three years to lead the Golden Eagles to a 5-0 victory over Florida International on Friday night.
Powers, pitching in place of usual Friday night starter Nick Sandlin, allowed nine hits but only walked one batter. He finished with 10 strikeouts.
His shutout was the first for Southern Miss since Cody Carroll blanked Marshall on May 2, 2015. It was also the first complete game of Powers’ college career.
Matt Wallner got Southern Miss (23-10, 9-3 Conference USA) on the board with a solo home run to left field to start the second inning. It was his team-leading ninth of the year.
Southern Miss then added an RBI single by Mason Irby in the fifth, as he followed a leadoff double by Bryant Bowen to left with a run-scoring single to right.
Hunter Slater added an RBI single in the sixth and Gabe Montenegro a run-scoring single in the seventh. Montenegro finished with two RBIs.
