PEARL — The Mississippi Braves used a big rally to snap a small losing streak on Wednesday.

The M-Braves scored the go-ahead run on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning, then tacked on four insurance runs after that to beat Pensacola 9-4 in a matinee at Trustmark Park.

Luis Valenzuela hit a two-run double and Tyler Marlette a two-run home run during the eighth-inning explosion. The M-Braves scored the go-ahead run on a squeeze bunt by Cleuluis Rondon to snap a 4-all tie.

The teams had traded the lead several times before that. Pensacola scored a run in the top of the first and another in the second on a home run by Taylor Sparks that tied it at 2. After Pensacola struck for two runs in the top of the fifth on a home run by Nick Longhi, the M-Braves got a run back in the bottom of the fifth and another in the seventh on a solo home run by Valenzuela.

Vladimir Gutierrez, one of the top pitching prospects in the Cincinnati Reds’ organization, struck out six batters and walked none, but gave up three runs in six innings. Touki Toussaint, the No. 11 prospect in the Atlanta Braves’ organization, gave up four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Toussaint had seven strikeouts.

Mississippi native Austin Riley was 3-for-4 with two triples, two RBIs and two runs scored for the M-Braves (5-8), who snapped a two-game losing streak overall, and a five-game skid against Pensacola (6-7). The Blue Wahoos have won six consecutive series against Mississippi since late in the 2016 season.

The M-Braves and Blue Wahoos will continue their five-game series Thursday at 7 p.m.
