- Vicksburg High’s Char’Davia Anderson won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles at the MHSAA Region 2-5A track meet.
Vicksburg High’s track and field team had its numbers reduced at last week’s Region 2-5A meet, but still managed to send a handful of top athletes on to the next round of the postseason.
Char’Davia Anderson won the girls’ 100 and 300 meter hurdles, and the Missy Gators swept the three sprint relays as they moved on to the Class 5A North State meet Saturday at Center Hill.
Brandi Dillon also qualified in two events, while Jordan Davis did it in four. Dillon won the discus with a throw of 94 feet and was third in the shot put.
Davis won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and was second in the long jump, triple jump and 300 meter hurdles.
The top four finishers in each event advanced to the North State meet. The top four there will move on to the Class 5A state meet May 5 at Pearl High School.
Anderson, a junior, has emerged as one of the top hurdlers in Mississippi and stayed on course to reach the state meet for the second year in a row. She won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.98 seconds, and the 300 in 48.31 seconds.
The Missy Gators’ 4×100, 4×200 relay teams of Kiona Patton, Taylor Gray, Shadia Cain and Markia Anderson also finished first, as did the 4×400 relay.
The 4×800 meter relay team also advanced by finishing fourth with a time of 12 minutes, 30.10 seconds.
Patton finished fourth in the 100 meters to advance, but was knocked out in the 200 with a fifth-place finish. Gray flip-flopped those results, coming in second in the 200 but missing the mark with a seventh-place effort in the 100.
In all, the Missy Gators will send 14 entries to the North State meet.
The boys’ team, meanwhile, won two events at the region meet but will send just four of their 12 entries on to North State.
Robert Jones won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 9 inches, and the 4×100 meter relay team won in 44.18 seconds. The only other qualifier was Cedric Phillips, who was third in the 200 meters and fourth in the triple jump.
