WC jumpers soar high at region meet

FLOWOOD — Warren Central’s high jumpers once again raised the bar for their competition.

Mason Quimby and Jalen Glass finished first and second, respectively, in the boys’ high jump, and Raven Thompson was second in the girls high jump at the MHSAA Region 2-6A track and field meet Saturday at Northwest Rankin.

All three — as well as a number of their teammates — advanced to the Class 6A North State meet April 28 at Madison Central and remained on track to qualify for the state meet May 4 at Pearl.

“At least we advanced, but we’re still working hard. Just keep going and trying to go as far as I can. We’ve got a ways to go,” Thompson said.

Quimby beat his teammate Glass for the first time this season — both jumpers cleared the 6-fooot-2 mark and Quimby won on a tiebreaker — while Thompson lost on a tiebreaker to Madison Central’s Asia Powe, the defending Class 6A champion.

Thompson and Powe both cleared the bar at 5 feet, 4 inches and then missed all three of their attempts when it was raised to 5-6. Powe got the first-place ribbon based off the fewest number of total jumps during the competition and Thompson settled for second.

Thompson, a senior who is attempting to reach the state meet for the fourth consecutive year, was happy to move on but not as enthused about her performance. Her best height this season is 5-10, which is also No. 1 in the state.

“I feel like it could have been better. The mat was kind of twisted and unlevel,” Thompson said. “But other than that I was doing pretty good if my steps would have been on. I felt kind of wide coming out of my approach. My jumps felt pretty good.”

The top four finishers in each event advanced to the North State meet. WC moved along six male athletes in seven individual events, as well as two relay teams.

In addition to the high jump, Glass finished third in the 200 meters. He and Quimby also teamed up with Tyler Walton and Kaleb Foxworth on the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams that both finished fourth.

Jaylen Whitaker finished first in the shot put and fourth in the discus to advance in both events. Brandon Fischer was third in the pole vault, Raymond Rimmey third in the 300 meter hurdles, and Joshua Griffin fourth in the 110 meter hurdles.

For Warren Central’s girls, Hannah Huntley finished second in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. The 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams both advanced to North State with third-place finishes, while Shanea Guise was third in the long jump and Ernestine Chin third in the shot put.
