More than 100 young people in Vicksburg and Warren County have applied for the 30 jobs offered by the city through its summer youth job program, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said.
As of May 10, the deadline for applications, Flaggs said, 133 high school seniors and college students with at least a 2.0 grade point average applied for the 30 available slots with the city. This year was the first time the city allowed students living in the county to apply for the jobs.
To narrow the list of applicants, he said, “We had to enforce some rules. One was if you were a city employee, none of your children could apply; if someone had been in the program before they couldn’t apply; and going forward you have only one time to apply (and be hired).
“It’s grossly unfair to allow the same people to utilize the program, when the program’s goal and objective is to make certain that young kids get the opportunity to have an experience of working for the city prior to going to college. It’s unfortunate that we had to do it (restrict applications), but that was the only way to do it.”
The jobs program will employ the students from June 11 through July 20. The applicants selected will work 24 hours a week. Flaggs said the city’s goal was to have at least one person working in every city department.
