Auburn is doing its best to climb the crowded ladder of Southeastern Conference frontrunners and make a push for a national seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Edouard Julien hit a grand slam Wednesday, and No. 7 seed Auburn scored all of its runs in the last three innings as it defeated No. 2 seed Ole Miss 9-3 in the SEC Tournament.
Auburn (39-19) remained in the winners’ bracket in the double-elimination portion of the tournament and will face No. 11 seed Texas A&M (38-19) Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Ole Miss (42-15) meets No. 3 seed Georgia (37-18) in an elimination game Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Georgia lost 7-0 to Texas A&M earlier Wednesday.
Ole Miss entered the day ranked No. 9 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings, while Auburn was No. 12. For most of the game, the Rebels had the upper hand. They scored two unearned runs in the third inning to go ahead 2-0, and starter Ryan Rolison took a shutout into the seventh inning.
From there, it was all Auburn.
The Tigers tied the game on a two-run double off the right field wall by Conor Davis, and went ahead as Luke Jarvis scored on a passed ball.
Another two-run double by Jay Estes in the eighth inning made it 5-2 and, after Ole Miss got a run back in the bottom of the eighth, Julien’s grand slam over the left field wall put the game out of reach.
It was the second big hit for Julien in the tournament. He had a walk-off RBI single in the 11th inning of a 3-2 win over Kentucky in a first-round elimination game Monday. He was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored against Ole Miss.
Estes had two hits and two RBIs, while Steven Williams and Brett Wright each scored two runs.
For Ole Miss, Rolison wound up with a no-decision after allowing the tying runs in the seventh. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out six.
Jacob Adams doubled, walked twice and scored two runs for the Rebels.
