Vicksburg police are holding two Claiborne County men for questioning in a reported Wednesday afternoon car burglary in which $8,500 in cash and an $1,100 ring were reported taken, Sgt. Johnnie Edwards said.

According to police reports, a family passing through Vicksburg parked in the Ameristar parking lot at 4116 Washington St. about 2:19 p.m. to look at the Mississippi River. While they were away from the car, a silver Toyota Camry pulled next to it and a man got out, went into the other car and took a purse containing the money, ring and other jewelry and identification.

The victims were able to get a car tag number as the Toyota pulled away and called police. The car was later stopped by Claiborne County sheriff’s deputies, and the men were taken into custody. Authorities were able to recover the purse, jewelry and identification, but did not recover the $8,500 and the ring.

Edwards said charges are pending in the case, adding the men are also wanted in Clinton on burglary charges.
