North Ward paving will begin soon

A total of 15 streets in Vicksburg’s North Ward and streets in Cedar Hill Cemetery have been targeted for resurfacing under a second phase of paving for the city.
The work is funded under the second draw of the city’s $18 million capital improvements bond issue approved in 2015.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday took two bids for the work under advisement: AJ Construction of Madison, $2.39 million, and APAC Construction, of Vicksburg, $1.95 million. The board is expected to award the project bid when it meets Friday.
“The bids came in good, so we’re going to be in good shape,” North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield said. “At the same time, we’re trying to add about three more streets in the north.”
Mayfield said portions of the selected streets will be paved, adding crews have had to replace utilities under the street. He said cameras are run through the lines to locate problems under the street. If a problem is found, “We go in and we don’t repair; we replace,” he said.
“I had to jump around,” he said. “Once you tear a road up and do a lot of repair and replacing lines, you want to try and get all those areas (with damage) so you won’t have to go back to them again and again.
“The money does not allow me to go on and do entire streets, unless it is a short street; you’ll find very few streets that will be paved in their entirety outside of Mission 66 and MLK (Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard), because we did a lot of work in both of those areas, and we tried to get those out of the way.”
Mayfield said he hopes to pave Washington Street from the bridge back to First East Street and Clay Street if the board gets more money.
The North Ward streets set for paving under the second phase include:
• Irene Street;
• Scenic Drive;
• Maxwell Street;
• Hugo Street;
• Hildegard Terrace;
• Pearl Street;
• Ford Road;
• Baldwin Ferry Road from Hope Street to the railroad bridge;
• Beresford Street;
• Baldwin Ferry from Court Street to the railroad bridge;
• First North Street from Clay Street to Main Street;
• Adams Street;
• Fayette Street;
• North Poplar Street;
• Jefferson Street;
• Mississippi Street, Alabama Street, N Section and J Section in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
