Toastmasters Club seeks members

Public speaking is one of the most dreaded activities all over the world.  Some experts even put it at the top of the list of the most common fears. Yet, often, like it or not, we are called upon to speak in public — perhaps a school project, a presentation at work, chairing a committee, introducing a speaker, making a toast, or giving an award or a eulogy, or even an impromptu interview.

Fortunately, a worldwide organization exists that can help people lessen their anxiety and develop communication and leadership skills in a safe environment.

Founded in California in 1924, and incorporated there in 1932, by 2018, Toastmasters International, Inc. had more than 357,000 members in 16,600 clubs and a presence in 143 countries.

Conveniently, there is a local group that is always looking for more members.  Vicksburg Toastmasters Club #2052, will celebrate its 60th anniversary this coming September. Amazing meetings have been held on Thursdays at noon at ERDC.

To encourage new membership, the Club has started meeting at a new time: Every Thursday evening from 6-7 p.m. The Club is seeking a more accessible place. See the Community Calendar for updated information, or contact Clariss Fletcher at 601-456-9737 or Susan Morang at 601-218-0721.

Visitors are welcome any time. You will not be put on the spot to speak. You will not be pressured to join. If you do decide to join, you can go at your own pace in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Through practice, participants become more confident and show much improvement.  It is not only your own development that is rewarding. It is also gratifying to give others feedback and to watch others blossom.

Students and young adults are especially encouraged. Good speaking and leadership skills can make a difference and lead to career advancement.

The Vicksburg TM Club is glad to bring demonstrations to organizations on request.  A hope is that employers will realize the benefits of Toastmasters for their employees and promote membership — maybe even paying their dues.

The current club officers are:  President, Keafur Grimes; Vice President of Education, Bobbie Bingham Morrow; Vice President of Membership/Public Relations, Clariss Fletcher; Secretary, Susan Morang; Treasurer, Laurel Gorman; and Sergeant-at-Arms, Andrew Maxwell.

For more information, contact Clariss Fletcher at 601-456-9737 or Susan Morang at 601-218-0721.
