Red Cross lifeguard class
An American Red Cross Lifeguarding class will be held April 1-12 at the Purks YMCA, 267 YMCA Place.

The 30-hour class will meet from 6 to 8:45 p.m. each weeknight for two weeks. Those interested must be at least 15 years old or turning that age no later than April 12, 2019, in order to participate and receive certification.

Lifeguard candidates must complete a prerequisite strength and endurance test which includes a 300-yard continuous swim using various swimming strokes as well as several timed speed, strength, and endurance tests.

Cost for the course is $125 for YMCA members and $175 for non-members. The class will be taught by veteran ARC instructors Susan and Bob Athow and Sylvia Gurtowski.

Adult softball
Registration for the City of Vicksburg’s adult softball leagues will continue until May 3. Registration packets can be picked up at the the Parks and Recreation office, 100 Army Navy Drive, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $175 per team, plus $10 for each non-city resident of Warren County and $20 for each resident of Sharkey, Issaquena, Claiborne and Hinds counties.

A mandatory coaches meeting will be held on April 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Parks and Rec office. All teams must have a representative at this meeting.

The Parks and Recreation Department is also seeking baseball and softball umpires for the upcoming adult and youth softball and baseball seasons. Anyone interested in umpiring games can pick up application forms at the Parks and Rec offices at 100 Army Navy Drive. WC basketball tryouts
Tryouts for Warren Central’s varsity boys basketball team will be held April 1-5, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. each day in Gym A. All players must have a current physical, concussion and residency forms, a copy of their birth certificate, and completed player information sheet. WC soccer tryouts
Tryouts for Warren Central’s girls and boys soccer teams will be held in late April and early May. All tryouts are at the school’s practice field along Mississippi 27.

The girls tryouts will be held April 29-30 at 4 p.m. each day, and the boys tryouts are May 2-3 at 4 p.m. each day. All players must be entering grades 7-12, have shin guards, a parental consent form and a current physical.

All players must also sign up prior to the tryouts, either by visiting coach Greg Head in Warren Central’s Gym B during school hours or at the practice field on April 26 (girls) or April 29 and 30 (boys) from 3:30 to 5 p.m. For more information, call Coach Head at 601-631-1257.

AJGT golf tournament
The Arrowhead Junior Golf Tour will host the Joseph M. Bartholomew Junior Classic March 30-31 at the Joseph M. Bartholomew Golf Course in New Orleans. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is for golfers ages 11-18. The entry fee is $195 and includes green fees, tee gifts, and trophies in four age divisions.

EMCC golf tournament
The East Mississippi Community College football program will host the Fourth Annual EMCC Football Golf Classic on Friday, May 3, at Lion Hills in Columbus.

The tournament benefits the EMCC football program through the EMCC Development Foundation. The cost of the four-person scramble is $250 per team, which includes green and cart fees, driving range access, sandwiches, T-shirt and a team photograph. A shotgun start is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Prizes during EMCC’s football fundraiser will be awarded for hole-in-one shots as well as for the longest drive and closest to the pin.
