There have many positives happening in Vicksburg and perfect weather for the Easter weekend probably topped the list.

Also, on Wednesday, more than 100 people, including parents, students, school, city and county officials and members of Warren County’s legislative delegation turned out for the Warren Central High School groundbreaking ceremony. The groundbreaking signals the start of a $29.67 million remodeling and renovation project.

“This is a great day, I’m excited, but most of all, I’m excited for our students at Warren Central High School,” VWSD Superintendent Chad Shealy said.

“I want to thank the community, because they voted yes for our students’ future.”

WCHS principal Eric Green concurred with Shealy.

“This is a pretty special day for Warren Central High School,” Green said. “This is kind of a culmination of the introduction of our career academies that we’ve had about three years at the high school. With these facilities, we’ll be able to bring them to more visible life than what we do currently with our facilities.”

And in looking forward to having classrooms for the school’s career academies, following the groundbreaking, Green said, “It’s all about the students. This is something the community envisioned for our children.”

More positives in Vicksburg:

• On Wednesday, St. Aloysius won the MAIS District 3-AAA tennis tournament. The Flashes won 30 of the 36 sets they played, and district championships at seven of the nine positions, while easily claiming the team title at the district tournament at Halls Ferry Park.

• On Wednesday, Mayor George Flaggs visited the White House to discuss the city’s success with the federal Opportunity Zone Program in Vicksburg and Warren County. During the visit, he also hand-delivered a letter to President Donald Trump in hopes the city will receive federal assistance to defray the costs of damage recovery in the wake of recent tornadoes.

“I feel confident we’re going to get some assistance, I just don’t know how much,” Flaggs said. Three EF-2 tornadoes touched down within minutes of each other April 13. According to information from Warren County Emergency Management, the twisters damaged 182 houses, 21 businesses and one church, Elevate Church on Manor Drive.

• On Wednesday, seniors from the Vicksburg Catholic School hosted a Luminary Prayer Labyrinth at St. Aloysius’ Balzli Field. The luminaries had names or organizations of those that are no longer with us honored or remembered.

• On Saturday, Warren Central held off a comeback bid by Tupelo to win 8-5 on Saturday and complete a two-game sweep of their first-round Class 6A baseball playoff series. Warren Central (19-9) advanced to the second round for the fifth consecutive season and will face Region 1-6A champion Desoto Central in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday at Desoto Central.

• Catherine G. Boone has been named president and publisher at Vicksburg Newsmedia LLC, and will assume those duties in early June. “I am humbled by this opportunity and look forward to being an active member of the Vicksburg community,” Boone said. “I am pleased to join The Vicksburg Post and continue the staff’s good work in producing quality publications that inform readers, showcase our communities and serve advertisers.”
