A Vicksburg man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty in 9th Circuit District Court to second-degree murder in a March 2017 shooting.

Circuit Judge M. James Chaney sentenced Christopher Dewayne Brown, 26, no address listed, at a May 5 sentencing hearing to 20 years with 10 to serve and placed him on 5 years post-release supervision.

Brown was charged in the March 7, 2017, death of Reginald Gaines, 30, who was a passenger in the rear seat of a car traveling south on U.S. 61 South when he was shot in the head.

Gaines was taken by a private vehicle to Merit Health River Region and later flown by helicopter to UMC, where he died the next day. His death was the first homicide of 2017.

Byron Martez Reynolds, 32, who was charged with Brown in the Gaines’ death, was sentenced 20 years in September.

In another case, Quintessa Shelton, 21, no address listed, was sentenced May 10 to five years in prison with five years’ post-release supervision after pleading guilty in circuit court to manslaughter by culpable negligence in the May2017 shooting death of Benjamin Brooks Jr., 19, at 200 Starlight Drive.

Brooks was shot at the home where he lived with Shelton and her mother. It was the second homicide in the city for 2017.

In other cases:

• Jethrell Drayton, 20, was sentenced May 10 to 11 years in prison after his probation was revoked and he pleaded guilty to charges of felony eluding and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He was also placed on four years’ post-release supervision.

• Lance Burton was sentenced to three years in prison and placed on five years’ post-release supervision after pleading guilty to possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
