School is out.

And before the children can say, “I’m bored,” the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library will kick off its summer reading program.

Registration will begin June 1 and run through June 22 at the library, 700 Veto St.

The theme for this year’s reading program is “A Universe of Stories,” and Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library Director Katrina Stokes said weekly activities and books for all ages are planned.

Also, there will be a few new happenings offered for those interested in participating.

“This year we will be counting minutes read instead of number of books,” Stokes said.

“We believe this will make reaching reading goals more equitable. Books for older children and teens are much longer and it’s harder to compete with shorter picture and chapter books,” she said, adding, “Each participant will also make a goal of how many minutes they will spend reading over the six week program.”

For every 100 minutes of reading, participants will have their name entered into a drawing for a Kindle Fire or $50 gift card, Stokes said.

“We will also have free treats for each 100 minutes read and prizes will be awarded to top readers,” she said.

Stokes said the library staff will conduct all of the planned events in partnership with the Vicksburg Kiwanis Club, which provided the library with funding toward the Summer Library Program.

“The Vicksburg Kiwanis Club will also provide volunteers,” Stokes said.

Excel by 5 and the United Way of West Central Mississippi will also be on hand at the kickoff event to provide activities to preschoolers at the Parent Resource Center located on the bottom floor of the library.

“Library events and activities are free and open to the public, and if anyone needs more information or are interested in volunteering to assist with any of our events, please call the library at 601-636-6411,” Stokes said.
