Outside of the sounds of fireworks celebrating Independence Day, Vicksburg and Warren County passed a calm Fourth of July, law enforcement officials said.

“We had no problems,” Vicksburg Police Chief Milton Moore said. “We had officers out on patrol for the holiday and the downtown area was quiet. The fireworks were the only activity.”

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said he had extra deputies out for traffic, and deputies assisted police with the Fourth of July fireworks downtown.

There was one problem in the county involving a 7-foot alligator that tried to cross the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 north of the Mississippi 27 exit about 9 p.m. Thursday. Wildlife Fisheries and Parks agents were called to handle the situation.

“I’m happy to say there were no major incidents,” Pace said.
