William Carlton Carlisle

William Carlton Carlisle died July 18, 2019, at his home in Yokena after a tractor accident.

The funeral will be Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg with the Rev. John Taylor officiating and the Rev. Bryan Abel assisting. Visitation will precede the service from 9 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Yokena Cemetery.

Mr. Carlisle was born in his family home in Yokena on Aug. 1, 1931, and spent all of his life in Yokena.

He attended Jeff Davis School and graduated from Jett High School in 1949, where he played baseball, football and basketball. He attended Hinds Jr. College on a basketball scholarship.  He worked for the Dr Pepper Company for two years, and then worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 35 years.  Before and after retiring from the railroad, he raised cattle on his farm in south Warren County and did volunteer work. He coached basketball, baseball and football for Porter’s Chapel Academy and City league teams.

Mr. Carlisle served as a deacon for Grace Baptist Church from 1965 until his death. He was also an usher at the church for 40 years. He served on the Board of Directors of Porter’s Chapel Academy during the 1960s and 1970s.

He was president of the Yokena Cemetery Association from 1986 until his death. He was treasurer of the Warren Cattlemen Association, and president of the Board of Directors of the Vicksburg Railroad Credit Union from 1984 to 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John William and Alice Sophia Wright Carlisle; brothers, Thomas Edward Carlisle and John Cecil Carlisle; sisters, Evelyn Irene Carlisle Grier and Mildred Alice Carlisle Kirkland.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Jeannette Tompkins Carlisle; daughters Elizabeth (John) Gullett, Carla (Michael) Koestler, Anita (Vic) Williams; brother, Malcolm (Mickey) L. Carlisle; grandchildren, John Carlton (J.C.) Gullett, Lance (Lacy) Gullett, Katie Koestler (Jonathan) Cantrell, Benjamin Carlisle Koestler, Whitney Smith (Jed) Pickett, Hannah Marie Smith and Philip Clarke Smith; two great-grandchildren, Sarah June Gullett, and Jackson Robert Cantrell.

Mr. Carlisle is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be J.C. Gullett, Lance Gullett, Carlisle Koestler, Jonathan Cantrell, Jed Pickett, and Clarke Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Grace Baptist Church.
