Candidates forum scheduled for Thursday evening

Warren County voters have the chance to put candidates for county and state offices on the spot Thursday ahead of the party primaries at a candidate forum at the Warren County Courthouse.

Sponsored by the Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Blacks in Government and the NAACP, the 6 p.m. forum will be held in the circuit courtroom on the second floor of the courthouse.

“We have confirmed candidates for governor — at least three, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, public service commissioner, transportation commissioner, state representative and county supervisor races,” Gertrude Young, one of the program organizers, said.

The candidates will each have time to explain their platform and then answer questions from the audience.

“This our 11th year (presenting a forum),” Young said, adding this forum will deal with contested party primary races because of the number of candidates running for the state and county offices.  “We invited the Democratic and the Republican candidates because they each have opposition in the primaries.”

The gubernatorial candidate for the Constitution Party, candidates from other political parties and independent candidates running for office were not invited because they will automatically be on the general election ballot.

Those candidates will be invited, along with the winners of the Republican and Democratic primaries, to an October forum before to the general election “so the voters will be able to have a clear understanding of each candidate’s platform.”
