Hits were plentiful for Vicksburg High. Runs were harder to come by. Fortunately, Florence had the same problems.

Jamie Ward went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Ellyia Walker was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored, and Vicksburg beat Florence 5-3 in a slow-pitch softball game on Tuesday.

The teams combined for 27 hits, but only eight runs. Florence — which also drew nine walks — left 14 runners on base. Vicksburg stranded eight and hit into two double plays.

The Missy Gators, though, used a big third inning to propel themselves to the win. Walker’s RBI double brought in the game’s first run, and she later stole home. Jazmine Miller and Shaniya Lockridge added RBI singles to give Vicksburg a 4-0 lead.

Lili Kistler had an RBI single for the Missy Gators in the fifth inning, and then they hung on as Florence rallied in the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Eagles used two walks and three consecutive singles to score a pair of runs before Vicksburg turned a game-ending triple play.

The Missy Gators got the first out on a grounder, one runner was thrown out at home, and another was called out for interference on the final play.
