St. Al wins big at home swim meet

The St. Aloysius Flashes warmed up for their biggest swim meet of the season by winning the one with their name on it.

Adam Eckstein and Tommy Martin each won four events, Jon Daniel Busby finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke, and St. Al’s boys team earned a first-place team finish Saturday at the 2019 St. Aloysius Invitational at City Pool.

St. Al bested St. Andrew’s, Warren Central, Murrah and Vicksburg High in the five-team meet. On Wednesday morning the Flashes will head to Flowood for the MAIS Overall Meet.

Eckstein won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.77 seconds, and the 100 butterfly in 57.68 seconds. He also joined Martin on the victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Martin won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.31, and the 100 freestyle in 52.35 seconds. His freestyle time was more than three seconds ahead of runner-up and teammate Spencer Carroll.

Carroll was also on the winning 400 freestyle relay team with Eckstein, Martin and Beau Harris, as well as the winning 200 freestyle relay team with Harris, Busby and Layne Sparks.

Busby won the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.71, and was also on the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams. He finished second to Martin in the 200 individual medley.
Lucas Larson was the fourth man on the 200 medley relay.

Among other Warren County finishers, Warren Central’s Scott Wallace was third in the 200 IM and 100 freestyle, Hayden Jones fifth in the 50 freestyle, and Adan Byrd second in the 100 backstroke.

Vicksburg’s Kameren Batty was fourth out of 43 swimmers in the 50 freestyle.
In the girls’ meet, Emily Cook and Leah Larson each won two individual events to lead St. Al to a second-place team finish behind St. Andrew’s.

Cook won the 50 freestyle in 27.84 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1:05.91. Her teammate Sam Graves was second in the 100 freestyle in 1:12.45.

Larson won the 100 butterfly in 1:11.51 and the 100 backstroke in 1:13.79. She was also on the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays that both finished second.

Larson, Graves, Chandler Tucker and Ann Elizabeth Farthing made up the two second-place relay teams.

Among other Warren County teams in the girls’ meet, Warren Central’s Katie Wallace finished third in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Alexis Renne was fourth out of 31 swimmers in the 50 freestyle, and third in the 100 backstroke.

The Lady Vikes finished third in the team standings and Vicksburg High was fifth. Julianna Juve was Vicksburg’s top swimmer, with a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle and an eighth-place finish in the 50 freestyle.
