Weekly Q&A series highlights local voices

If you’ve looked at this page in our Weekend edition the last two weeks, you’ve noticed a new Q&A series.

Recently, I’ve used this space to have a dialogue with readers about the state of the newspaper industry and more specifically, how your hometown newspaper, The Vicksburg Post, is doing today and where I see us headed in the future. In those columns, I mentioned wanting to create an opinion page that is a platform for different local voices and community opinion.

Two keywords there are local and community. Consider how much stronger this page and our community would be if every day you turned to A4 and heard only from those who live, work or have a deep connection to this community. What if every issue discussed was one that affected your family, your neighborhoods, the schools your children attend, the roads you drive on or the company you work for?

The series, lead by Vicksburg Post photographer Courtland Wells, aims to touch on some of those points by getting more local faces and opinions in the newspaper. It’s also a great way to showcase more of Wells’ award-winning photography.

In the last two weeks, we’ve featured faces and voices from Vicksburg’s Central Fire Station and the Vicksburg-Warren School District 2019 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees. Is there a question you’d like to see answered or a group featured? Let us know by emailing news@vicksburgpost.com.

Another way to submit content is through letters to the editor. Letters should be no more than 400 words and must be signed. They can also be submitted to news@vicksburgpost.com. If you’d like to participate but don’t feel comfortable writing a submission, we also have an outlet for you. A couple of times a week we run “Please Fix” and “Thank You” photos. “Please Fix” photos are reserved for areas around town that need cleaning up or attention, like littered areas, and “Thank You” photos are for areas that have been fixed or are nicely kept. A recent “Thank You” photo was to those who maintain the grounds and keep shrubbery trimmed and tidy at Fire Station 2 on Indiana Ave.
