Mayor George Flaggs Jr. announced Monday the town hall, scheduled for Tuesday, to discuss public safety in Vicksburg has been postponed.

According to a release from the mayor’s office, the postponement is “due to the illness of one of Vicksburg Police Department’s officers and training responsibility of another.”

The meeting, originally scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Robert M. Walker Building, would have given the public a chance to address concerns about public safety in the city with key leaders of the city and law enforcement.

The meeting would have also followed a violent weekend in Vicksburg, where the city recorded its second homicide of the year and another shooting that saw two seriously injured.

“I plan to announce an alternative date and time for this question and answer session as soon as all five officers can be present to answer questions from the public regarding public safety in Vicksburg,” Flaggs said in the release.

Those scheduled to attend the meeting included Chief of Police Milton Moore, Deputy Chief of Operations Bobby Stewart, Deputy Chief of Administration Eric Paymon, Captain Penny Jones and Lt. Johnnie Edwards.

“It’s my intention for the public to question and give comments to our police department so they can better combat crime and reach our goal of zero tolerance of crime in Vicksburg,” Flaggs said.
