Where to Retire magazine, a national magazine “geared toward helping people with retirement relocation decisions” called Vicksburg one of the top eight cities to retire.

In a release Tuesday, the magazine announced Vicksburg is profiled in a feature titled “8 Low-Cost Cities” in the November/December 2019 issue, which is now available.

“These communities prove beauty and amenities don’t have to come at a high cost,” Where to Retire editor Annette Fuller said. “Vicksburg might be small, but it offers residents plenty to do with a buzzing downtown, riverside casinos and abundant outdoor options. The affordable housing costs and Mississippi’s generally low taxes add to the appeal.”

Vicksburg Warren Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Pablo Diaz said the magazine’s announcement is exciting, but not surprising.

“We are thrilled and really not surprised as we know that more and more people are discovering and falling in love with our city,” Diaz said. “As residents of Vicksburg, we are fortunate to enjoy its military park, its beautiful topography, its historic mansions and historic buildings, and also its vibrant and growing downtown.

“We hope more people come to explore and learn the many reasons why they should consider moving here and enjoying life the Vicksburg way,” he said.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 700,000 Americans relocate to new towns in retirement each year. According to the magazine, generally these relocating retirees are healthier, better educated and more affluent than those who choose to not relocate, and they bring significant economic benefits to their new states and hometowns.

“Vicksburg being selected for this honor shows that we’re continuing to prepare ourselves for the future,” Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said. “Everyday we’re seeing more and more people choosing to call Vicksburg home.”

The other cities included in the magazine’s feature include Auburn, Ala.; Augusta, Ga.; Daytona Beach, Fla.; Grand Junction, Colo.; Loudon County, Tenn.; Thibodaux, La.; and Wallace, N.C.
