Heavy rains, slick highways combine for hazardous driving conditions

Heavy rains combined with slick streets resulted in a series of wrecks inside the Vicksburg city limits with police responding to 11 wrecks between 6 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. according to information from the Vicksburg Police Department.

The first wreck occurred in the eastbound lane of I-20, followed by two more on I-20 about three minutes later at 6:27 a.m., also in the eastbound lane. In all, six wrecks occurred on I-20 in the city, the last coming at 10:59 a.m. when an eastbound 18-wheeler left the highway at the Indiana Avenue exit.

Other wrecks included a 6:59 a.m. collision in the 3800 block of Clay Street, a car leaving the road at Haining Road about 7:01 a.m., a collision in the 3200 block of U.S. 61 South, another at 9:48 a.m. at the intersection of John Allen and Wisconsin Avenue and a 1:06 p.m. two-car collision in the 3000 block of Indiana Avenue.

In the county Sheriff Martin Pace said deputies worked six wrecks between midnight and 2 p.m.

One of those wrecks deputies responded to involved an 18-wheeler and a small truck on I-20 westbound. The Mississippi Highway Patrol was in charge of investigating the accident.

The accident, which happened just before 11 a.m., took place at the 7-mile marker on I-20. The 18-wheeler was sent into the woods off the interstate, while the truck suffered significant damage.

There was no report from MHP on the accident or information on any injuries.
