Vicksburg sweeps Natchez in basketball openers

Cameron Butler finished with 18 points and five assists, and Keshawn Brown nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds as Vicksburg High’s boys basketball team opened its season with a 77-56 victory over Natchez on Saturday.

Butler and Brown were among four Gators who scored in double figures. Peytin Jackson had 13 points and six rebounds, and Taylon Smith scored 12 points. Jaden Williams only scored five points, but grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked four shots.

Vicksburg shot 10-of-13 from 3-point range, with Butler and Smith each going 4-for-5.
In the girls’ game, Vicksburg jumped out to a 15-point lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 71-35 win over Natchez.

Destiny Sims led the Missy Gators with 17 points and Yakia Burns scored 11. Shakora Knight finished with eight points, four steals and four assists.

Vicksburg had 15 steals in the game and only committed 15 turnovers of its own.
Vicksburg’s boys team will return to action this Saturday at 1 p.m., when it faces Terry in the Beat Cancer Shootout at Northwest Rankin High School.

The Missy Gators will next play on Nov. 12, at Madison Central at 6 p.m.
