I applaud the column recently in The Post discussing the legality of fireworks in the city.

The Post on two separate days stated that it is legal to detonate fireworks within the city limits. Where did that legality decision come from? On Dec. 31 I called a very senior officer in the Vicksburg Police Department and asked the question “is it legal?” He responded “No.” As a matter of fact, he forwarded me the ordinance for fireworks which had been updated in September 2019.

Now I am not an attorney and the ordinance language is not all that clear, but it appears it is not legal.

My point in all this rhetoric is to ask our city to be clear and factual regarding fireworks in the city limits.

There is a great show on the Fourth of July which should satisfy the need to view fireworks. The private firing is ridiculous and actually very upsetting and dangerous to people and pets.

When I was 16 my family home was burned down on the Fourth of July by a wayward rocket. Police are burdened enough within our city to have to worry whether it is a gunshot or fireworks and this city has enough gunshots no doubt.

Mayor Flaggs, could a meeting be held with the board and come to a conclusion like Richland and Madison and ban the use within the city? Those cities are pretty progressive and Vicksburg could join them.
