Five seventh-grade students from Vicksburg Junior and Warren Central Junior High schools will be the recipients of $100 scholarships Monday as the Omicron Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. holds its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast.

The event is 8:30 a.m. at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

“This is our 31^st breakfast,” program coordinator Edward L. Huell Jr. said. “It originated back in 1989. We do this annually on the Martin Luther King holiday. We expect about 350 guests to come out and kick off the King holiday.”

The speaker for the program is Kevin T. Wilbert, the Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. 11^th District director for the state of Mississippi.

Founded in 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., the organization is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men.

Tickets for the breakfast are $25 in advance and $30 Monday. Anyone wanting to purchase tickets in advance can call Huell at 601-630-0142.

The breakfast is not the only observance for Dr. Martin Luther King being held Monday.

The Dr. King Memorial Committee in partnership with the First Mississippi Chapter of Blacks in Government, the Vicksburg Branch of the NAACP and the city of Vicksburg will present the 34^th annual Dr. King Birthday Memorial Celebration Monday at 6 p.m. at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

The theme of the program is “Remember, Celebrate, Act.” The guest speaker is Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba.

King Solomon Baptist Church will hold a panel to discuss the importance of voter education in 21^st century America at 7 p.m. at the church, 180 Oak Ridge Road.

Panelists include Jennifer Riley Collins, the Rev. Bob Conrad, Bill Marcy, T. J. Mayfield, C. Leigh McInnis and Kimberly Walker Nailor.

A student panel of high school students, Rose Marie Thuha and Taylor Jennings, college students, Gabrielle Terrett and David Bernard will present a pro and con discussion in response to prepared questions on the same topic.
