Red Carpet scholarships
Applications for the 2020 Red Carpet Bowl scholarships are now being accepted. A total of eight $750 scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors from each of Warren County’s four high schools — three each from Warren Central and Vicksburg High, and one each from St. Aloysius and Porter’s Chapel Academy. Students at the Academy of Innovation are also eligible to apply.

Application forms are available from guidance counselors at the high schools, or by emailing Travis Wayne Vance at travis.w.vance@erdc.dren.mil. In addition to the application form, students must list their extracurricular activities, a 500-word essay, and an unofficial transcript.

Applications should be mailed to Dr. Robert Abraham, 3038 Indiana Ave., Vicksburg, MS, 39180 by March 2, 2020.

Zeke West Bass Tournament
The 12th Annual Zeke West Memorial Team Bass Scholarship Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 29 at Lake Bruin State Park. This fishing tournament begins at 6:30 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m. The registration fee is $100 per boat, with an optional Big Bass entry fee of $10 per person. First place is a guaranteed $1,500 prize, and additional prizes will be paid for second through fifth places based on the number of entries. All fishermen will be fed after the tournament and door prizes awarded.

Justin Henry Baseball Camp
The 2020 Justin Henry Baseball Camp is scheduled for March 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Warren Central High School baseball field. The camp is for children in grades K-6, and drills will focus on hitting, pitching, fielding and baserunning. Instructors include Justin Henry, a former Ole Miss and professional baseball player, as well as other former college and pro players.

In addition to the drills, the camp will have a high school home run derby and speed showcase. A mini-camp for children ages 4-5 will also be offered from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

Run Thru History
Registration is now open for the 41st annual Run Thru History. The 10K run and 5K race walk through the Vicksburg National Military Park is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, at 8 a.m.

The entry fee is $30 for the run and walk. The children’s 1-mile fun run is free. The first 800 people registered will receive a race shirt. Awards will be given in more than a dozen age groups, and a postrace party with live music and refreshments will follow.

Lifeguard class
The Vicksburg YMCA will hold an American Red Cross lifeguard certification class March 30 through April 10 at the Purks YMCA pool.

Those taking the class must be 15 years of age or older before April 10, 2020, and pass an endurance test on the first day. The endurance test consists of a 300-yard swim; two minutes of treading water without using hands; and a 20-yard swim, surface dive, and retrieval of a 10-pound brick, followed by another 20-yard swim without the use of hands.
The cost of the class is $125 for YMCA members and $175 for non-members. Completion of the class and Red Cross certification is required to hold a lifeguard job at City Pool.

Game officials needed
The City of Vicksburg’s Parks and Recreation Department is looking for umpires and referees for its youth baseball, softball and basketball leagues. Those interested can pick up applications at the Parks and Rec office at 100 Army Navy Drive. For more information, call Joseph Graves at 601-831-8050.

Hinds football tryouts
The Hinds Community College football team will hold an open tryout on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Joe Renfroe Stadium on the Raymond campus.

Registration will take place on the day of the tryout from noon to 1 p.m. at Mayo Field House. All participants must have an up-to-date physical and bring it to the registration. The cost of the tryout is $20.
