Lady Vikes roll past Terry

Warren Central’s softball team continued its early-season offensive onslaught on Tuesday, by using 14 walks and a big second inning to beat Terry 16-6 at Sports Force Parks.

It was the third time in as many games this season that the Lady Vikes (3-0) have scored in double figures. They’ve scored 48 runs in all.

The Lady Vikes reached double figures against Terry despite getting only five hits. Mary Evelyn Hossley, Sarah Cameron Fancher and Kayleigh Karel each walked three times, and eight of the nine starters walked at least once.

Mason Smith went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and one run scored, and was the only Warren Central player with more than one hit.

Five walks, as well as a dropped third strike and two wild pitches, led to a nine-run outburst in the second inning that put the Lady Vikes ahead 11-1. Smith hit a two-run single with two outs that made it 9-1.

Terry stayed in the game for a while, but Warren Central finished it via the mercy rule by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Two walks — one of them to Brooke Comans with the bases loaded — and an error contributed to that big inning.

Kaylee Hoeft pitched four innings for Warren Central. She allowed two runs, neither earned, and two hits while striking out two batters. Hossley pitched the last two innings.

Warren Central will return to action Wednesday evening when it hosts Florence at Sports Force Parks. The Lady Vikings are also scheduled to play in a tournament Saturday at Sports Force Parks hosted by Vicksburg High School.
