While Tuesday’s presidential primary in Mississippi settled many of the nominations for November’s general election, it simply narrowed the field in one race.

In the race for the Republican nomination for Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District, a seat long held by U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson,  two candidates are headed to a March 31 runoff.

Neither Thomas L. Carey or Brian Flowers won a majority of votes during Tuesday’s election, but earned enough to make it to the winner-take-all run-off to earn a spot on the November ballot against Thompson.

Voters in Warren County who chose to vote on the Republican ballot strongly supported Flowers with 1,250 votes. Carey earned 981 votes in the county according to unofficial reports available from the Warren County Circuit Clerk’s office.

Overall, though, election officials reported nearly 28 percent of the county’s 29,579 voters participated in Tuesday’s election, with most of those voters choosing Democrat ballots.

In those races, Thompson easily outpaced his lone challenger for the Democratic nomination, while voters in Warren County followed other Democrat voters across Mississippi in strongly supporting former Vice President Joe Biden’s bid for the presidential nomination.

Biden received 81.45 percent of the votes in Warren County. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders received just over 16 percent of the vote in the county.
