Work badges were all that was necessary to receive a personal pan pizza at a popular restaurant Wednesday.

Pizza Inn owners Michel and Rashmi Thakur were providing free personal pan pizzas to employees at Merit Health River Region Medical Center as those employees, and other medical officials, sit on the front lines of the response to the COVID-19 virus.

“We did this so people would have something to look forward to at this time,” Rashmi said, adding the giveaway was only held Wednesday.

Employees could call in their order for a single topping personal pan pizza and then come to the restaurant to pick it up.

Rashmi said her husband reached out to those who work at the hospital via their Facebook page.

Close to 25 pizzas had already been handed out by noon. “And they are still calling in,” Rashmi said.

The Thakur’s purchased the Pizza Inn on Clay Street in 2009. Following their move to Vicksburg, the couple, along with their son, Prafulla became U.S. citizens, and they have become an integral part of the community.
