The Mississippi State Department of Health Wednesday announced 88 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 2,003. It also announced the number of virus-related deaths had grown to 67.

In Warren County, the number of confirmed cases has grown to nine. That number is an increase of two from Tuesday and is expected to rise in the coming days as more testing is done locally, and results from the state’s one-day test site at Pemberton Square Mall last Tuesday become available. Officials confirmed 75 tests were conducted at that site.

As of Wednesday, officials say the results of those tests at the mall have not been reported.

Surrounding Warren County, Madison Parish, La. has two confirmed cases, Claiborne County has three confirmed cases, Sharkey has three confirmed cases and Issaquena County is yet to record its first confirmed case.

In Hinds County, the number of confirmed cases is 178.

Tuesday, a troubling report came from Yazoo County, where officials with the Federal Correctional Institution in Yazoo City, announced 25 inmates and three staff members have tested positive.

Overall in Yazoo County, the state is reporting 38 confirmed cases of the virus, with one virus-related deaths.

And, given the outbreak at the prison, it is unclear of where those confirmed cases are being accounted, since the state’s policy is to report the confirmed case on where the individual is from, not the facility in which they are tested or housed.

The statewide shelter-in-place order issued Wednesday by Gov. Tate Reeves went into effect Friday at 5 p.m. Also going into effect at 5 p.m. was a series of additional restrictions announced Thursday by Vicksburg and Warren County officials.

The local orders, which include additional restrictions on businesses and closures, including the county-controlled Clear Creek Golf Course, also include a city-wide juvenile curfew that lasts from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. each day. This is in addition to another city-wide curfew, for all other residents, that goes from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day.
