Child injured after accidentally discharging handgun

The Vicksburg Police Department responded to a call of a shooting on Halls Ferry Road this evening that could have been far worse.

According to the department, a 3-year-old boy got a hold of a handgun and then dropped it. When the handgun struck the ground, it fired, sending a bullet upward that grazed the boy on the head.

He was transported to Merit Health River Region with minor injuries, where he was treated and released.

The call was dispatched at 5:37 p.m. and the incident happened on the 4400 block of Halls Ferry Road.
