Washington Street closed to trucks

Published 10:29 am Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Beginning Tuesday morning, the city of Vicksburg is closing North Washington Street to truck traffic.

City public works director Garnet Van Norman said the street is being closed to trucks because Hemphill Construction Co., which is building the city’s auxiliary waterline project, is preparing to bore under the road as part of the project and city workers are repairing damage from landslides along North Washington.

All trucks will be rerouted to the U.S. 61 North Bypass.

Also, North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield said Monday the speed limit in North Washington and Haining Road will be reduced from 45 mph to 30 mph during the waterline project.

No date was given when North Washington will be reopened to trucks or how long the reduced speed limit will be in effect.
