The number of new COVID-19 cases in Mississippi dipped slightly following a record-setting day, but the death toll continued to climb.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported a total of 288 new cases and 12 deaths on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 9,378. The death toll, meanwhile, reached 421.

The number of new cases was down from 404 on Friday — the highest single-day spike during the pandemic — but the number of deaths nearly matched the 13 reported the day before.

Four new cases were reported in Warren County, bringing its total to 98. Two people in the county have died from the virus. No new deaths were reported on Saturday.

In Claiborne County, the number of confirmed cases increased to 41 on Saturday, while the number in Sharkey County remained steady at five. Issaquena remains the only county in the state to not yet report a positive case. No deaths have been reported in either Claiborne or Sharkey County.

The MSDH reported that 436 people were hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 infections on Saturday, and another 171 have suspected infections. Of those, 133 were in intensive care units and 76 were on ventilators.

The number of patients on ventilators saw a brief dip on Friday to 58, but rose back up on Saturday. That number has largely remained steady between 70 and 80 since reaching a one-day high of 103 on April 15.

A total of 90,472 COVID-19 tests have been performed in Mississippi as of Friday at 6 p.m. That number reflects the number of tests performed, and not individuals tests.
