For the first time in three weeks, Warren County’s COVID-19 death toll has increased.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported the first COVID-19 related death in the county since April 20 among its latest statewide totals released Thursday morning. Four new cases were reported in Warren County, bringing its total to 127.

Of the three virus-related deaths in Warren County, two have been city residents, while the third was a resident of the county.

Statewide, 393 new cases and 15 deaths were reported. The death toll is among the highest single-day totals of the pandemic. The highest total was 18 on April 16, and only five other days have had at least 15 deaths. The last was May 5, when 17 deaths were reported. The number had been trending downward since then but spiked up.

The last day without a virus-related death in Mississippi was March 23.

The statewide numbers reported Thursday morning are as of 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Two deaths each were reported Thursday in Neshoba and Clarke counties. Eleven other counties, including Warren and Hinds, had one death each.

The death toll in Mississippi now stands at 480, which ranks 23rd nationally. Its 10,483 cases ranks 27th.

Of Mississippi’s total cases reported since early March, 6,268 are classified as “presumed recovered,” meaning it has been 14 days or more since a positive test if the patient was not hospitalized; or 21 days or more if the patient was hospitalized.

Hinds County has the most COVID-19 cases in Mississippi, with 717.

Claiborne County reported seven new cases on Thursday, after holding steady at 41 for more than a week. Sharkey County remained at five cases. No deaths have been reported in either county.

Issaquena remains the only county in the state to not yet report a positive case.

A total of 105,326 tests have been performed statewide as of Wednesday evening by either the MSDH Public Health Laboratory or other providers.

The Public Health Laboratory has tested 15,810 people, of which 1,986 have tested positive.
