Carl Stevenson Barnes Jr.

Carl Stevenson Barnes Jr., 74, of Vicksburg passed from this life on May 17, 2020, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. He was born April 24, 1946, in Vicksburg, MS. His parents are Ellene Ezell Barnes and the late Rev.Carl Stevenson Barnes Sr.

Steve graduated from Columbia High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Air force from 1966-1970.

During his years of service, he was deployed overseas where he fought in Vietnam. Following an honorable discharge from the military service, he had a successful career on the railroad.

Steve retired from Amtrak Railroad in 2006 and has since enjoyed retirement spending his days fishing, hunting and woodworking.

He is proceeded in death by his father and his son-in-law, Dean Boutwell.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Carolyn Drowns Barnes; his mother, Ellene Ezell Barnes; sons, Scott Matherne and wife Paula, Paul Matherne and wife Terri; daughters, Karen Bass, Tracy Newhouse and husband Ken, Courtney Owens and husband Chuck and Carla Boutwell. Fourteen grandchildren are left to cherish their “Papa Steve.” Grandchildren include Dillon and Collin Matherne, Alison Lee, Taylor Noe, Kendall Braden, Hunter and Tyler Matherne, Tyler and Tristan Newhouse, Trace, Turner and Trent Owens and Anna Claire and Cooper Boutwell, and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Sherry McHaffey and brother-in-law Don and brother Mark Barnes and sister-in-law Susan.

A memorial service to honor the life of Steve Barnes will be on Thursday, May 21, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg.

The family are members of First Baptist Church Vicksburg. Tim is involved in a number of civic and volunteer organizations including the United Way of West Central Mississippi and serves on the City of Vicksburg's Riverfront Redevelopment Committee.
