Warren County’s COVID-19 case count continued to slow on Thursday, even as the state of Mississippi had another deadly day in the ongoing pandemic.

Sixteen deaths were recorded in the state as of 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to figures released by the Mississippi State Department of Health on Wednesday morning. A total of 263 new cases were reported.

One new case and no deaths were reported in Warren County. Warren County has only had three new cases reported since Saturday, and its total now stands at 136. The county has had five deaths since the pandemic began in early March, including one reported on Tuesday.

The number of cases in Claiborne and Sharkey counties remained steady at 51 and seven, respectively. Two new cases were reported in Yazoo County to bring its total to 194, and Hinds County reported its 800th case to lead the state.

Issaquena County is still the only one of Mississippi’s 82 counties that has not yet reported a COVID-19 case.

The statewide case count neared 12,000 with Wednesday’s update. A total of 11,967 cases have been reported, along with 570 deaths.

Three of the 16 deaths reported Wednesday were in Forrest County, and two each were reported in Jones and Clarke counties. Eight other counties, including Hinds, Madison and Copiah, had one each.

Hinds has had 23 deaths since the pandemic began. Lauderdale County has had the most, with 46, followed by Forrest (32), Pearl River (27) and Neshoba (26).

The state reported 7,681 COVID-19 patients in the “presumed recovered” category, which leaves approximately 4,000 active cases statewide.
