Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey confirmed an 8-year-old boy who emergency officials worked to save from drowning Wednesday afternoon has died.

The boy, who was attending a summer camp at the Junius Ward Johnson YMCA, 267 YMCA Place, was pronounced dead at Merit Health River Region at 3:52 p.m.

The YMCA responded to the accidental drowning Wednesday evening.

“The Junius Ward Johnson YMCA family is deeply saddened to inform our community that earlier this afternoon a young man with our Day Camp was found unresponsive in our pool,” the statement read. “Our lifeguards acted immediately to pull the young boy from the water, administer CPR and call paramedics. Paramedics continued CPR upon their arrival and transported the child to Merit Health River Region Hospital where, to our great regret, he passed away.

“We are conducting an internal review to learn the facts about what happened,” the statement continued. “At the Junius Ward Johnson Y, making sure all children and adults are safe in the pool is a top priority. Our entire Y family is deeply saddened by this situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young man and his family.”

Vicksburg Fire Chief Craig Danczyk said 911 received the call of a possible drowning at the YMCA at 3:15 p.m. Units from the nearby fire station responded within moments and began life-saving measures. Danczyk also said Josh Davies, a firefighter who was off duty at the time, was also in the area and responded.

The child was then transported to Merit Health River Region for emergency care.

The Vicksburg Police Department said the accidental drowning is still under investigation and updates will be provided when available.

The pool at the Junius Ward Johnson YMCA and the pool at the Wilkinson Ver Beck facility on Oak Ridge Road remain closed while YMCA officials continue their investigation.
