Health officials announced Friday an additional 13 new COVID-19 cases in Warren County, continuing a trend of double-digit cases reported daily. With the new cases, the county has now seen 384 positive tests during the pandemic and 16 virus-related deaths.

Over the past seven days, Warren County has reported 104 new cases, an average of more than 14 per day. The new cases also pushed the active cases to 123, setting again the highest mark during the pandemic.

Statewide, officials with the Mississippi State Department of Health announced 550 new cases overnight and six additional deaths. Overall, the state has now reported 25,066 cases and 1,022 deaths.

The spike in recent numbers has caused worry among state lawmakers and health officials.

“If we’re not careful, Mississippi is going to look like New York at the height of the pandemic,” Dr. Thomas Dobbs, Mississippi’s state health officer, said during a briefing Thursday evening. “We can stick our head in the sand and try to find excuses so that we don’t have to modify our behaviors, but it doesn’t change the truth. The truth is, there’s a lot of COVID out there, it’s killing people, it’s going to kill a lot of people and it’s going to stress out our healthcare system.”

Gov. Tate Reeves said on his Facebook page he and Dobbs are looking at the next steps that can be taken to curtail the recent trend.

“Coronavirus numbers improved slightly from (Thursday), but they are not back under control,” Reeves said referring to Thursday’s report of more than 1,000 new cases. “We are still at risk of overwhelming our hospital system if trends continue.”

Thursday’s report, as well as the report Friday, showed the number of people hospitalized with the virus was at its highest levels during the pandemic. Thursday, the state reported 536 hospitalized, while Friday’s report showed 533 hospitalized.

Also in Friday’s report, Issaquena County, which had gone through the entire pandemic without reporting a case before reporting two positive cases Thursday, added three more Friday bringing their total to five positive cases.

Sharkey County, which had remained in single-digits over the past two months, has seen a spike recently. Friday, 21 confirmed cases were being reported.

Claiborne County reported 202 cases with 10 virus-related deaths. Yazoo County Friday reported 441 confirmed cases with six deaths.

Louisiana health officials Thursday reported Madison Parish continued to show 324 total positive cases during the outbreak.
