Greatest on the Gridiron: ’94 Warren Central vs. ’48 Redwood

Published 9:10 am Friday, July 3, 2020

In round one of The Post’s Greatest on the Gridiron tournament, we have the 1994 Warren Central Vikings and the 1948 Redwood Rockets.

An iconic team loaded with stars — more than a dozen seniors played college football — the 1994 Vikings are usually on anyone’s short list for the best ever in Warren County. They posted three shutouts in four playoff games, finished 14-1, and won the school’s second MHSAA Class 5A championship in six years. All-America running back Brian Darden had a county-record 2,238 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns.

Redwood didn’t enjoy a lot of glory on the football field, but the 1948 season was a rare high. The Rockets ripped off eight straight wins after losing their season opener and finished with a 9-2-1 record. Seven opponents were held to seven points or less, and the win total was the most in school history.
