Two teams with similar resumés meet for the Eagles Region championship.

After a couple of modest seasons in 1979 and ‘80, the 1981 St. Aloysius Flashes emerged as a force on the state scene by making a run to the MHSAA Class B championship game. The Flashes posted five shutouts and only allowed 51 points in their 10 wins in 1981.

They’ve taken a similar path to the Greatest on the Gridiron’s Elite Eight, by upsetting No. 2 seed 1969 Temple and then cruising past No. 3 seed 1958 St. Aloysius.

Porter’s Chapel only had one winning season between 1991 and 2003, but broke through to win a district championship in 2004. They took their game up another notch in 2005 by posting nine shutouts in 12 games, and no offensive touchdowns before the MPSA Class A semifinals.

The Eagles also boasted a powerful offense that averaged 37.9 points per game. Running back Chris Mixon scored a then-school record 20 rushing touchdowns.
