The number of new cases in Warren County has followed a trend across the state in July, where numbers have reached new pandemic-highs on a nearly daily basis. So far this month, the county has reported 351 new cases. In June, the county reported 254.

As for the state as a whole, Thursday’s report was better, but still showed a scary trend for the state’s healthcare infrastructure. After days of reporting new case totals well over 1,000, Thursday’s report showed 982 cases and 13 new deaths. Since the state reported its first case on March 11, it has now confirmed 48,053 cases and 1,436 deaths.

Thursday’s report also showed the number of patients hospitalized, in intensive care units and on ventilators remained stable since Wednesday, but were still at or near pandemic-highs.

Claiborne County Thursday reported 363 cases and 12 deaths, while Yazoo County reported 664 cases and eight deaths. Sharkey County continued to see a rise in numbers, now reporting 91 overall cases. Issaquena County remained at 16 cases and one death.

Sharkey County remained just one of two counties in the state to not yet report a virus-related death. The other county is Benton County.

Claiborne and Sharkey counties are two of 23 counties in Mississippi currently under strict COVID-19 guidelines and mask mandates. In Warren County, even though a mask mandate has not been ordered by Gov. Tate Reeves, a mask mandate for all businesses and public buildings was ordered by the city of Vicksburg and Warren County Supervisors. The city’s mask mandate continues through at least Aug. 3, while the county’s order extends through at least Sept. 8.
