Mayor George Flaggs Jr. has closed the pavilion in the Douglas Park area of Marcus Bottom out of concern for potential infection from COVID-19.
Flaggs said at Monday’s meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen he closed the pavilion after traveling through the area on weekends and seeing people congregating at the structure who were not wearing masks or practicing social distancing.
City and state regulations restrict outdoor gathering to 20 people or less and Flaggs said that number was exceeded each time he visited the area.
He said the pavilion will remain closed until the COVID-19 threat subsides, adding he hoped the move will prevent someone from contracting the disease.
