Three face murder charges in trooper’s death

Three people face murder charges in the shooting death of off-duty Mississippi Highway Patrol Lt. Troy Morris, according to information from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

Arrested were Treyon Washington, 24, who turned himself in at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office Saturday and is being held without bail in the county Detention Center pending an initial court and Cderrius Norman, 17, and Damion Whitley, 25, who were arrested in New Orleans, La., and are expected to be returned to Mississippi.

Morris, 58, and a 27-year veteran of the Highway Patrol, was working his second job as a postal worker early Friday morning. He called MHP and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office after the U.S. Postal Service truck he was driving got a flat tire on U.S. 61 in Jefferson County, authorities said.

Before a deputy arrived, Morris was shot and killed inside the truck, Jefferson County Sheriff James Bailey said. 

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Marshall’s Service, Louisiana State Police and other agencies were involved in the investigation, which is ongoing,
