Number of estimated active COVID-19 cases in county falls to single digits

For the first time since mid-April, the number of estimated active cases in Warren County is down to single digits.

Friday, the Mississippi State Department of Health announced just one new COVID-19 case in Warren County. That report pushed the number of estimated active cases in the county to eight; the lowest number since April 14.

The report also pushed the seven-day average of new cases in Warren County to their lowest levels since April 21. Over the past seven days ending Friday, Warren County has reported just 1.9 cases per day.

Sadly, though, Friday’s report was not all positive, as state health officials announced another death connected to the virus. The death is the second death reported in September and the 47th overall.

Since the first case was reported in Warren County on March 29, the county has reported 1,348 total cases.

The report also comes a week after the Labor Day weekend, a holiday that usually attracts gatherings, and caused worry by state health officials. But it is still too soon to see if this past holiday weekend causes a spike in cases as the Memorial Day weekend did.

“It’s too soon to know about Labor Day,” Dr. Dan Edney, with Medical Associates, said. Edney is part of the Governor’s COVID-19 Task Force and also is one of the doctors who advise local elected officials on the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m not expecting much of a Labor Day bum since the mask order is in place compared to July Fourth.”

Tuesday, both the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, along with the Warren County Board of Supervisors extended local mask mandates, which requires anyone entering a business or public building to wear a mask, to at least Oct. 5.
