Carolyn Sue Webster Strothers

Mrs. Carolyn Sue Webster Strothers was born Dec. 23, 1942, in Laurel to the late Woodrow Webster and Lula Mae Dace.

Carolyn attended Oak Park High School in Laurel, where she graduated in the top 10 of her class, then choosing to attend Alcorn A&M College in Lorman and majoring in business education. At Alcorn, she was the recipient of several honors and awards, culminating with her attainment of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education in 1965.

Her business education teaching career began in 1965 at Rosa A. Temple High School in Vicksburg, where she was named Star Teacher of the Year. She continued her career within the Vicksburg Warren School District with North Vicksburg High School and Vicksburg High School, successively.

The pursuit of mastering her craft lead Carolyn to further study at Tuskegee Institute, Indiana University and Mississippi College. Studying at these institutions paved the way for Carolyn to return to Alcorn State University to continue her studies in business education, where she received her Master of Science Degree in Business Education. For over 37 years, she taught countless students typing, keyboarding, computer application, word processing, business law, personal finance, general business, secretarial office procedures, shorthand and accounting I and II.

Carolyn accepted Christ at an early age and united with Jackson Street Missionary Baptist Church in 1965 and remained a faithful and dedicated member of the church.

She met and married Percy Strothers on Oct. 30, 1966, and to this union, two wonderful children were born. Carolyn remained a faithful wife to Percy for 50 years.

She is a member of Les Soeurs Charmantes Social & Civic Club, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Les Dames Charmantes Bridge Club, the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion Tyner Ford No. 213 and other professional organizations. She was instrumental in continuing the legacy of the Melinda C. Robinson Subdivision and served as President of the subdivision’s 50th reunion in 2019. Her unwavering hard work and dedication to the neighborhood has ensured that the 1st Black developed neighborhood in Vicksburg remained successful and prosperous.

Carolyn enjoyed working with young people and believed that all children can learn. With this belief, she instilled the desire to learn in all her students. Further, she encouraged her students to always perform to the best of their abilities, no matter the situation or circumstances.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow Webster and Lula Mae Dace; her sister, Barbara Page; her brother, Gregory Webster; and her niece, Lisa Page.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Eric Strothers Sr. of Jackson; one daughter, Karen Strothers-Clark of San Francisco; two grandchildren, Ericia Ahnia Strothers of Houston, Texas and Eric Strothers Jr. of Dallas , Texas; two nieces, Lynette Page of San Francisco and Vanessa Page of Jackson; one nephew, Michael Page of Houston; extended family, including the Ellis, Green and Walton Families; and immeasurable friends and former students.

Services are scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at 2 p.m. at the Vicksburg City Auditorium with Pastor Trollars W. Moore officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Public visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.
