For the first time ever, St. Aloysius’ volleyball team walked off the court a winner.

Presley Carr served seven aces, Lauren Flowers had five, and St. Al beat Clinton Christian 3-2 (25-21, 25-6, 14-25, 24-26, 15-4) on Monday for the first victory in the program’s history.

St. Al had lost 17 consecutive matches since starting the program in 2023. Eleven of those came this season.

“These girls earned it, they deserved it, and it feels good. It really does,” coach Allison McSherry said. “We know we’ve been giving them the right tools and finally I think they figured out how to implement everything.”

St. Al won the first two games, then lost the next two to turn eager anticipation into nervous dread. A rally from a big deficit in the fourth game carried into the fifth, however, and the Lady Flashes cruised to a match-clinching 15-4 rout.

Flowers served eight consecutive points in the deciding game, and also finished the match with five kills.

Camille Jeffers added 11 kills and Julia Moberley served four aces.

“You talk about a heart attack almost,” McSherry said of losing the third and fourth games. “We were way behind on that fourth set, made a comeback, and ended up going two over, 26-24. They were great competition to play against, but luckily we finally had it tonight.”

St. Al also swept the middle school and junior varsity matches. The middle school won 2-0 (25-9, 25-16) and the JV won 2-0 (25-8, 25-8) as well.

In the JV match, Carr had 14 aces on 17 serves, and Addison Bednar had seven aces on 10 serves.

St. Al will have the rest of this week off, and returns to action Sept. 19 at home against Christ Covenant. The middle school match begins at 4 p.m., the JV at 5 and the varsity at 6.
