JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — The Gamecocks rocked Southern Miss.
Tre Stewart and Anwar Lewis each scored two rushing touchdowns, and Jacksonville State ran for 273 yards and five TDs as a team as it routed Southern Miss 44-7 on Saturday.
Jacksonville State quarterback Tyler Huff completed 14 of 16 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown. He was also a big part of the running game with 11 carries for 77 yards and a TD.
Stewart led the Gamecocks with 96 yards and two touchdowns, and Lewis had 65 yards and two TDs.
Stewart scored on a 32-yard run on Jacksonville State’s opening drive, Lewis had a 7-yarder later in the first quarter, and Huff a 6-yard TD run midway through the second as the Gamecocks led 21-7 at halftime.
Huff threw an 85-yard touchdown pass on the Brock Rechsteiner on the third play of the third quarter to make it 28-7, and the Gamecocks pulled away from there.
Southern Miss’ only points came on a 2-yard run by quarterback John White early in the second quarter. It was a rare highlight.
White was only 9-of-18 passing for 117 yards, and the Golden Eagles had 246 yards of total offense.
White and Tate Rodemaker threw two interceptions apiece and the Golden Eagles lost two fumbles as well. Rodemaker’s two interceptions came on the first two series of the game and he was replaced by White after that.
The six total turnovers were the most in a game for Southern Miss since 2013.
Southern Miss (1-3) will have a bye week next Saturday, and then begins its Sun Belt Conference schedule Oct. 5 at home against Louisiana-Lafayette.
