St. Al’s Edwards finishes second at Watson Classic meet

Samantha Edwards’ cross country winning streak came to an end, but she still turned in an impressive performance on Saturday.
The St. Aloysius senior clocked a 5-kilometer time of 19 minutes, 26 seconds to finish second out of 269 runners in the girls’ Silver Division at the Watson High School Classic in Clinton.
Edwards had won her previous four races.
West Ouachita’s Emma Bielkiewicz won the Silver Division title with a time of 19:15, and Clinton’s Kaedyn Wilson was third in 19:34.
The meet included more than 1,300 varsity runners from high schools in Mississippi and Louisiana, split into three girls and three boys divisions. St. Al and Warren Central’s teams both competed in the Silver Division.
Warren Central’s Cora Lindsay and St. Al’s Julia Tuminello both placed in the top 100 in the 5K girls’ race, and WC’s Will Bates did the same in the boys’ race.
Lindsay finished 61st overall, with a time of 22:30. Tuminello was 91st, in 23:27. Warren Central’s Abigail DeJesus had a time of 24:14 that was good for 127th place.
For the boys, Bates placed 87th with a time of 18:28. The boys’ Silver Division winner was West Ouachita’s Jack Kelley, in 15:57.
Cohen Coomes was St. Al’s top boys’ runner. He placed 182nd out of 353 runners, with a time of 20:07.
In the girls’ 3-kilometer junior varsity race, Warren Central’s Yashira Narvaiz finished 18th out of 121 runners, with a time of 13:45. Kaylan Ellison (15:19) was 48th and Ava Henry (15:36) 57th.
St. Al’s RileyAnne Smithhart was 53rd, in 15:27.
