Bond’s goal, stellar defense lift Warren Central over Pearl

Warren Central only got one goal Tuesday, but it was enough.

Luke Bond scored two minutes into the second half, and Warren Central made it stand up to beat Pearl 1-0 in a boys soccer game.

Bond’s goal was a header off a corner kick by Duke Esparza.

Warren Central keeper Jamarian Shelly made six saves, including three in a five-minute span late in the second half. Charlie Esparza and Jackson Holden provided solid defense in front of Shelly.

Pearl outshot Warren Central 9-8 despite playing short-handed after a one of its players was red-carded for a hard foul.

Warren Central reached the first checkpoint of its season with an impressive 8-1-1 record. It won’t play again until after Thanksgiving, when it hosts Vicksburg High on Dec. 3 in its MHSAA Region 2-6A opener.

In Tuesday’s girls game, Pearl beat Warren Central 4-0.
