Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) Deputy Chief Michael W. Bryant announced in mid-November he would retire from VPD after 32 years of service, and a party in his honor was held on his last day in office Nov. 26.
Just one day prior to his official retirement, Bryant was honored at the regular meeting of the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen, where Mayor George Flaggs Jr. presented him with a plaque and said his service to the River City has been invaluable.
“As police commissioner and as mayor, and the Mayor and Board of Aldermen, we want to take this opportunity to tell you well done,” Flaggs said. “I read in the Bible it said it’s more blessed to serve than to be served. And for you to stand there 32 years and walk out the door, it’s remarkable.”
Chief of Police Penny Jones also said Bryant is a presence on the police force that will not be easily replaced.
“Throughout his distinguished career, Deputy Chief Bryant has served in numerous capacities, contributing to the growth and success of our department,” Jones said. “His tenure spanned across several divisions, including patrol, internal affairs, and administration. His broad experience and leadership in these areas have been essential in making the Vicksburg Police Department the professional and well-respected agency it is today.”
During Monday’s meeting, prior to his retirement party Tuesday, Jones said Bryant is a man of few words.
“Wow,” Bryant said, visibly emotional. “Thank y’all for this and for the last 32 years. Thank you.”
